Pollarding and Re-pollarding

Pollarding and Re-pollarding

This heavy reduction of a tree can only be carried out by someone who understands the growth and health of trees. This usually entails heavier work than a standard reduction that may remove 10-30% of the crown’s canopy. Pollarding tends to remove 40% and upwards.

Pollarding involves the removal of branches and limbs to the top and side to encourage the tree into producing a dense growth of new shoots. It is not a short-term process and our expert team are highly experienced in how to achieve this in a way that will create the space and look you require as the new growth comes in. The aim is to leave the tree with no growth points so that the regrowth is even and balanced.

Re-pollarding is a process carried out to take limbs and branches back to previous pollard points. As with the original pollarding, this takes deep understanding of the tree and its future growth to ensure it remains healthy and grows as desired after this more impactful process.

Pollarding may be suitable where a tree has been unmaintained for a prolonged period and needs to grow in a more constructive way. Or where a tree exists in a space that has changed usage and the shape is no longer appropriate. The stimulation of new growth that pollarding encourages can also be used to bring a tree back to a more full and pleasing shape over time.

Pollarding is not suitable for all tree species. Our team will very happy to guide and advise with a FREE quotation.
